Cambodia Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MWRM) on Tuesday urged fishermen to be extremely cautious while going out to the sea.
The ministry urged the fishermen as well as people living along the seaside to follow the MWRM weather updates to avoid any untoward incident during the rainy season.
Som Piseth, Governor of Kep province, said yesterday that fishermen in the province have decided not to go for fishing because of an increase in huge waves amid rain.
However, the Kep provincial authority is not banning them from fishing. “The authority wants the fishermen communities in the province to be vigilant and seek help from the rescue teams on the shore in emergencies without fail. More patrol officers have been deployed to intervene when accidents happen,” Piseth said.
Meanwhile, Koh Kong deputy provincial governor Sok Sothy said yesterday that necessary preventive measures have been issued for fishermen as well as tourists.
Fishery Community Chief at Kampot province, Sim Him, yesterday said, “The fishermen did not go for deep sea fishing as a precaution. We are in close contact with them to share updated information on the weather.”
He also highlighted the importance of conserving the mangrove forest because mangroves can help reduce the damages when huge waves appear during the rain.
