As the two-month fishing ban along the western coast ended, more than 500 deep sea fishing vessels from Kanyakumari set sail on a fishing expedition on Tuesday.

The vessels are owned by the fishermen from Thoothoor and surrounding areas. They operate from the Thengapattinam harbour in Kanyakumari and Kochi and Kollam fishing harbours in Kerala. “The last season ended with a good catch. We hope that this season would be fruitful too,” said D Sharlin from Thoothoor village.

Similarly, a good number of fishermen from the Ramanathapuram district working in the fishing harbours in Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra have left for their ports starting from Saturday itself
