Incessant rainfall for the last one week has triggered flash flood in different upazilas of Bagerhat, marooning over five thousand families.

Moreover, the flood has already washed away over four thousand shrimp enclosures in different areas of the districts.

Due to the heavy rainfall, most of the roads in several areas of Bagerhat town, including Mithapukurpar, Kacha Bazar, Chalapatti, Pura Bazar Mor, Basabati, Sahapara, Khanjahan Palli-Gobardia, Khardwar, Khanjahan Ali Road, Shaltala Intersection and Land Office Intersection, have gone under knee-deep water, putting thousands of local residents in utter misery.

Bagerhat District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Masudur Rahman said as of yesterday afternoon about 5,363 families in different low-lying areas have been badly affected due to the flash flood caused by continuous rainfall during the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, Bagerhat District Fisheries Officer (DFO) ASM Russell said, as per the primary assessment, at least 4,230 fish enclosures in different upazilas have been washed away due to the flooding.

Alongside Bagerhat municipality area, many roads, establishments and vast low-lying areas in Mongla and Morrelganj municipalities have been flooded due to the continuous rainfall.

Rahman Gazi, a resident of Mongla Municipality area, said many roads in his locality have remained waterlogged as the drainage system of the municipality is not functioning properly.

Fishermen are trying to protect their enclosures from flooding, using nets and ropes.

If such rain continues for another day or two, most of the fish enclosures in those upazilas will be badly damaged, many fish farmers said.

Bagerhat Water Development Board (WDB) Executive Engineer Masum Billah said the water level in all the rivers of the district has decreased slightly and currently water is flowing below the danger level.
