The BMC intends to transform the Trombay jetty by developing eco-tourism activities with an aim to explore the ecology around the jetty. Amidst the mangroves and sea waters, the BMC intends to create a host of facilities ranging from a butterfly garden, nature interpretation centre, crab and turtle ponds, a natural trail broadway, birdwatch towers and viewing decks among others, as part of its development plan.

A mangrove grove café, besides kayaking and boating activities are also among the offerings planned for tourists and visitors. The jetty overlooks Navi Mumbai and the Elephanta caves. Various migratory birds flock in the vicinity of the jetty. “Members of the Koli community operate the jetty. We want to develop the area without disturbing the ecological surroundings and the fishing activities. Spaces will also be developed for community events,” said a BMC official. The BMC intends to operate electric operated carts or buggies. and use solar power.

Approvals Sought

The BMC has sought approvals from various authorities, including the forest department, coastal zone authority, and the Navy, for the project. The BMC has unveiled plans to revamp Trombay jetty, aiming to enhance eco-tourism and explore the rich ecology surrounding the area. The proposal is to develop the area to beautify the jetty without disrupting ecological balance and fishing activities.
