The sight of hundreds of dead fish floating on Jambhulwadi lake and water hyacinth decomposing on its surface has baffled residents living near the lake.

This is the third incident in three years when dead fish have surfaced in the lake. Residents have blamed the dire state of the lake and lack of management of water hyacinth as the primary reason behind fish death.

“Drainage is a big problem because the lake is a breeding ground for hyacinth. Every year, lakhs of rupees are allotted for removing hyacinth. But, instead of spending all the money only on removal, implementation of drainage lines can be speeded up,” said Vikrant Singh, who actively cleared the hyacinth.

Some residents also claimed to have seen chemical spraying done by contractors as the hyacinth dried up before the tender period ended. However, PMC officials denied the claim.

Environment officer Mangesh Dighe said, “We have not used any chemical to clear hyacinth, it has all been done manually.” Around 70 fishermen depended on the lake for their livelihood.

Dinkar Gojare, head of drainage department, PMC, said, “Around 80% of the sewage line connection work has been completed. We are hoping to complete the remaining work within the next 20 days. We are also looking at projects to help rejuvenate the lake.”
