All-Goa Small Scale Responsible Fisheries Union (AGSSRFU) on Friday accused the coastal police and the fisheries department of failing to act against the illegal fishing in the Zuari.

The AGSSRFU alleged that mechanised fishing through purse seine fishing gear was carried in the river from May 4-7 midnight and beyond, in violation of the directives issued by the high court of Bombay at Goa.

“All the measures that director of fisheries, superintendent of fisheries and the coastal security police had promised in the court affidavit are not functional as no patrol boat from any of the concerned govt department is seen in the Zuari during the night,” AGSSRFU president Shaila D’Mello said in a letter to the coastal police and the fisheries department.

The fisheries union has urged the authorities concerned, including the Captain of Ports department, to take appropriate steps to prevent illegal fishing in the river.
