More than 200 seafood products from around fifty companies are now able to benefit from the new Breizhmer quality guarantee label, providing consumers with assurances of the origin and quality of seafood from Brittany (a peninsula, historical country and cultural area in the north-west of modern France, extending out toward the Atlantic Ocean.).
Independent audits have been carried out for around 200 seafood products in a process that has involved fishermen, shellfish and fish farmers, trading platforms and fishmongers, with fifty companies in Brittany participating.
‘This represents approximately 20,000 tonnes of fish, 700 tonnes of mussels and 1500 tonnes of oysters,’ said Isabelle Thomas, secretary general of Breizhmer, who added that the process is far from over.
The objective is to reach 120 certified companies, providing confirmation of the traceability of products and giving them visibility, particularly internationally.
Breizhmer has launched a communications campaign which is expected to last two years. The aim is not only to target individual consumers, but also players in the mass retail and catering sectors.
