Depression over Southwest Bay of BengalThe Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a red alert for a depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, effective from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on November 26, 2024.

As of 11:30 p.m. on November 25, the depression was located approximately 290 km southeast of Batticaloa and 410 km southeast of Trincomalee. It is expected to intensify into a deep depression within 12 hours and approach the island’s eastern coast.

Weather impact:

Cloudy skies will prevail over most of the island.

Very heavy showers exceeding 200 mm are likely in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, Uva, and Southern provinces and the Puttalam district.

Heavy showers above 100 mm are possible in other parts of the island.

Strong winds and thundershowers are expected across the island, especially in Northern, Eastern, Uva, and Central provinces.

Sea conditions: Sea areas around the island will be rough to very rough, with wind speeds of 60-70 kmph. Very heavy showers or thundershowers are expected over the sea.

Advisories: Naval and fishing communities are advised against venturing into deep and shallow sea areas around the island until further notice. Stay alert and adhere to safety measures.
