Sri Lanka was considering a price cap on ice used for fisheries, member of parliament Ajith Gihan said.

“There is a mafia going on in the ice business. This is not fair. This not only affects the fishermen but also the consumers,” Ajith Gihan told reporters. Questions were raised on 50 kilos of ice, which costs 500 rupees, being sold for 800-900 rupees.

Prices have been called for ice and lower rates have been offered. “We are in discussions to control the rates,” Gihan said. The government plans to open ice factories near fisheries ports as a solution, he said.
