Hundreds of traditional fishermen staged a protest here on Monday demanding action against those who are practising light-assisted fishing method which is unscientific. Under the banner of Uttara Kannada Zilla Nadadoni Mattu Sampradayika Meenugarara Okkoota, the fishermen staged a protest in the city and submitted a memorandum to the district administration demanding action against those indulging in this method of fishing. Fishermen from Honnavar and Kumta took part in the protest. Fishermen leader Sadananda Harikantra said more than five lakh traditional fishermen are depending upon the sea to meet both ends meet. However, the light fishing method (in which light is used to attract fish at night) practiced by rich fishermen is posing a threat to the livelihood of traditional fishermen, besides raising the fear of fish famine in the days to come. He said that usage of high capacity engine boats and bull trawlers have also affected their livelihood and cut down jobs in the fish industry. Several varieties like pomfret, king fish etc, have diminished due to this, Harikantra said. He said Goa and Maharashtra have banned such methods of fishing but the methods are still being practiced in Karnataka. The fishermen were told by the officials that the DC will soon convene a meeting to address the issue.
