The Goa government has appointed South Goa collector, Swapnil Naik to conduct an inquiry into the lathicharge against the agitating fishermen on May 12.In an order issued yesterday, the government has asked to find out whether there was any incident of lathi charge on the people demanding ban on fishing using LED lights on May 12 near fisheries department. Also, whether the Sub Divisional Magistrate had ordered lathi charge, if the order was not issued by Sub Divisional Magistrate, then the officer who issued order and circumstances that led to the order. The inquiry report is to be submitted within a period of 30 days. The order was issued following representation of traditional fishermen opposing use of LED lights for fishing.Since May 10, the traditional fishermen were protesting near Captain of Ports in the city against use of LED lights for catching by bull trawlers but it took a violent turn on May 12 as a scuffle broke out between the protestors and police. Following the incident 12 protestors were detained and released later.The fishermen alleging that there was lathicharge agaisnt them met the Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar. Though the Chief Minister initially maintained that there was no lathcharge but later relented and assured the fishermen to order magisterial inquiry into the incident.
