Scores of fishermen from several villages situated along the Khammam-Nalgonda border began fishing operations in the Palair reservoir in Kusumanchi mandal on Tuesday. Armed with nets, members of the fishermen cooperative societies from both Khammam and Nalgonda districts embarked on fishing in the Palair reservoir, the major hub of freshwater fish and prawns in the district. However, the usual enthusiasm associated with the launch of fishing activity was apparently missing with many fishermen gripped by a sense of pessimism over the prospects of fish yield due to the diminished water level in the reservoir. Sources said the Palair reservoir, fed by Nagarjunasagar dam in Nalgonda district, had the potential to yield 300 tonnes of fish and 70 tonnes of prawns in a fishing season usually lasting over a month. However, the fish and prawn yield this year was likely to decrease drastically owing to the low water level in the reservoir.
