Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development jointly with National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA) has taken measures to establish a new aquaculture center in Sewanapitiya, Polonnaruwa to uplift the fresh water fisheries industry in the dry zone. The new aquaculture center would be built under a cost of Rs. 430 million under the development project “Pibidemu Polonnaruwa” (Awakening of Polonnaruwa) which will be implemented according to a concept of President Maithripala Sirisena. Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera inaugurated the Sewanapitiya Aquaculture Center on Friday (July 01). Nearly 10 million fish fingerlings at a time will be stocked in all the reservoirs in Polonnaruwa district and in addition fish breeding will also be conducted in the reservoirs of the dry zone districts including Anuradhapura district. Marine fish consumption in the hinterlands of the dry zone districts is not adequate and therefore fulfilling their necessity of Protein by promoting the consumption of fresh water fish is another main objective of this project. The Minister also initiated the development of the fishing village, Alawakumbuka in Dimbulagala under the program of “Wewak Samanga Gamak” on the same day.
