Nagaland department of fisheries has aimed to be self-sufficient in fishes by 2030 under State vision plan for which the department has been tasked to identify various species of fish suitable for the climatic condition of the region. This was revealed by director of fisheries Kevisa Kense in his address during the two-day workshop on co-management of fisheries and aquaculture in Nagaland being organized by college of fisheries CAU (1), Tripura (W) in association with directorate of fisheries Nagaland at Hotel Japfü, Wednesday. On the present scenario of fisheries in Nagaland, Kense disclosed that the state produces 8220 MT fish during 2015-16 with 478 lakhs fish seed production. He informed that there are eight demonstration fish farms and five farming centres in state. Commenting on water resources, he said Nagaland has estimated potential total area of 30,000 ha in inland culture fisheries (ponds/tanks) and 82,500 ha in integrated fish culture (paddy-cum-fish culture and livestock-cum-fish culture). Highlighting on the achievement of the department, the director said breeding of 17 numbers of exotic ornamental fish species have been successfully conducted so far at the aquarium unit. He said the department has inaugurated fish kiosks under NABARD RIDF-XX at Chekiye village (Dimapur), Chumukedima (Dimapur) and Jalukie town (Peren). Speaking as the chief guest, secretary to the government of Nagaland fisheries department Nikhashe Sema termed the fisheries practice in Nagaland as “primitive method and stressed on the need for it to be upgraded technically with modern type of farming in order to produce sufficiently in the state. He urged the participants to acquire enough information and disseminates the knowledge to the farmers for positive impact in fisheries in Nagaland. In a keynote address, associate professor and head of department, College of fisheries, CAU, Lembucherra Tripura Dr. R.K. Majumdar said the five years project under centre of excellence in fisheries and agriculture biotechnology (FAB-COE) are working in the North East region since 2014 to produce self-sufficiency and quality fish in the region. Dr. R.K. urged the fish farmers to farm fishes according to the market demand. He informed that management is one of the aspects which would help them to improve the fish farming in the state. State co-odinator of Nagaland FAB-COE Himadri Saha also addressed the gathering. In the technical session various resource persons spoke on fisheries and technology adopted in respective districts of Nagaland by respective district DFO, scope and avenue in developing /enhancing ornamental fish trade, value added fish product in context to NEH region, potentials in diversification of fisheries in NE India. In the programme, the chief guest released leaflet “fisheries and aquaculture perspective in Nagaland sponsored by department of biotechnology ministry of science and technology government of India organized by college of fisheries central agriculture university Lembucherra Tripura; vote of thanks was proposed by deputy director of fisheries Neitho-o Kuotsu. The Workshop was attended by fisheries department officials from various districts of the state.
