Hundreds of fish died in Chettinayakkanpatti irrigation tank as pollution level has gone manifold, owing to indiscriminate discharge of effluents from factories and processing units. A large number of dead fish was found floating on the water, shocking fishermen and local people. But no officials from any department visited the spot for inspection for a long time. Wanton negligence and lethargic attitude of the district administration and pollution control board were the prime reasons for the massive destruction aquatic life in the tank. We are tired of giving petitions to the PCB and the district administration. Foul smell emanating from it was unbearable, said A. Selvam, a resident of the village. This tank was the prime irrigation source to hundreds of acres of land at Chettinaickanpatti, Saralapatti and Poodhipuram villages recharging irrigation and wells in around these villages.
