In a bid to ensure long term benefits to fishermen, the fisheries department is encouraging captive nurseries in the district. Under the programme, the irrigation tanks and ponds in upland, delta and Agency areas are being developed for taking up captive nurseries. The tail-ends of these water sources are separated for development of captive nurseries. The fish seed is developed separately and after the breeding period the grown up seed will be released into the tank for growth as full pleated fish. As the programme is being taken up under NREGS, funds up to Rs 11 lakh would be spent for development of tank bunds and other amenities. Speaking to The Hans India, deputy director of fisheries department T Kalyanam said that 100 tanks were identified in upland, agency and in delta areas for development of captive nurseries in the first phase. In the subsequent phases, entire district will be covered to ensure regular source of income to fisher folk, particularly registered fishermen cooperative societies, he added.
