The Sri Lanka Navy on Friday has arrested 10 local fishermen in two separate incidents for allegedly engaged in illegal fishing practices. Naval personnel attached to SLNS Gajaba located in Thalvupadu in North Central Naval Command, arrested two local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing practices in the seas off Thalpadu yesterday (26). Along with the suspects two dinghies and a monofilament net used for fishing were taken into naval custody. The arrested fishermen and items were handed over to Mannar Assistant Directorate of Fisheries for further investigations. On the same day another eight fishermen were apprehended, for engaging in illegal fishing in Kadiraweli sea area, by naval personnel attached to SLNS Kashyapa located in Vakarei in the Eastern Naval Command. During the arrest, a purse seine net, two dinghies and a diving mask were taken into custody. The suspects along with the belongings were produced to Vakarei Police for onward action.
