The Tamil Nadu government has been taking steps to obtain Scheduled Tribes status for fishermen community, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said on Tuesday. Intervening during a debate on the demand for grants to Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department and Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department in the Assembly, she said, “I have taken up the matter with the Prime Minister when I met him. I demanded that fishermen be included in the list of Scheduled Tribes. Congress MLA JG Prince raised the issue, appealing for speedy steps. He also sought steps to provide Dalit Christians all the concessions enjoyed by Scheduled Caste Hindus. Responding to this, Jayalalithaa said all the assistance enjoyed by Adi Dravidars is being given to Dalits who embraced Christianity. Quoting a statement made in the policy note of Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, she said, “The students converted to Christianity who are eligible for scholarship studying in self finance institutions are exempted from paying compulsory and non-refundable fees which are directly disbursed to the colleges by the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department. The maintenance allowance depending upon the class they study is credited to the savings bank accounts of the students.
