Minister for Local Self-Government K.T. Jaleel inaugurated the renovated fish market here on Friday. Addressing the function, Dr. Jaleel underscored the need to segregate various kinds of garbage, including plastic, organic and e-waste, to effectively address the problem of waste management and ensure clean surroundings, especially in urban and other thickly populated areas. “We should accord top priority to cleanliness in fish and meat markets so that consumers get clean and hygienic food items as in markets in the Gulf and other developed nations, he said. Recalling that the fish market in Valancheri town in his constituency, Kuttipuram, had earned disrepute for waste accumulation in the past, Mr. Jaleel assured municipal chairman V.V. Rameshan that he would provide requisite funds to set up a waste treatment plant if the authorities submitted a proposal for the project. He said the government had embarked on a Suchitwa Mission to build three lakh public toilets across the State. Mr. Rameshan, while presiding over the function, said the municipality would take steps to set up a waste treatment plant. District Collector K. Jeevanbabu distributed to fish vendors uniforms sponsored by various voluntary organisations.
