Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Fisheries Department has established some 49 fish farms established in Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi and Lower Dir districts, besides training of over 100 farmers to strengthen their professional capabilities on methods and techniques of fish breeding. Total Rs 173.122 million was allocated for five ongoing and three new projects in the ADP for 2013-14, said a three-year progress report issued here Saturday by KP Fisheries Department. The department took a number of steps to improve and expand fish production during the last three years. It initiated various reforms for the promotion of community based fisheries, protection and preservation of fish biodiversity and development of appropriate fish production technologies. According to report, five trout hatcheries were repaired and made functional whereas more than one million trout eggs were imported. Those eggs were left for hatching in cold water canals of Kaghan, Swat, Chitral, Upper Dir and Shangla. The Fisheries Department also started repairing and expansion of three carp fish hatcheries for increasing the production of fish in the province. In ADP 2015-16, total Rs 205.172 million was allocated for the completion of nine developmental projects. Additionally, a Trout Training Center would be established in Kaghan Valley to train farmers in trout-fish breeding. The facility would help locals in establishing fish farms and develop trout fish breeding on commercial basis.
