The first proper wholesale cum retail fish market was inaugurated at Bamunpukhuri 1 village under Dimapur by Parliamentary Secretary for Municipal Affairs, Economics & Statistics, R. Tohanba on Saturday. Speaking at the programme, Tohanba urged people to think that the fish market belonged to them and make best use of it by maintaining it properly. He pointed out that the total fish production in the state was 8220 MT as per 2015-16 financial year while fish import came to 3850 MT constituting only 32 % of total fish consumption. Stating that fish seed rearing unit was only 60 hectare which needed upgradation, Tohanba said there was a wide scope for development of fisheries which will boost the rural economy and sustainable development. He said that the government was committed to bring all round development and appealed for cooperation from the public. DMC Administrator, H. Atokhe Aye in his keynote address said that the objective of the fish market was to provide wholesale hygienic fish while trying to reduce water and air pollution caused by fish markets. Officer in charge of National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), regional office Guwahati, Dr. Sanjay Sharma; Additional Director, Fisheries Department, Kohima, Imti Longkumer and Bamunpukhuri 1 Village Council Chairman, Vikishe Achumi also spoke briefly at the programme. The construction of Wholesale cum Retail Fish Market was financed (90%) by NFDB, Hyderabad, Government of India and implemented by Dimapur Municipal Council.
