Fisheries minister J Mercykutty Amma said registrations will become mandatory for boat building yards in the state. She was speaking at a stakeholders meeting to discuss the amendments to the Kerala Marine Fisheries Regulation Act held at the Government Guest House in Kochi on Wednesday. The minister asked the labour unions in fisheries sector to intervene so that it would help to uplift the fishermen community, which was being exploited. The minister assured that the government would take all necessary measures to reduce the exploitation of the working class, which is rampant in fisheries sector. She also said steps to raise the standards of the community peeling centres will be initiated. A special committee chaired by district collector will be formed to ensure the standards of community peeling centres, she said.
