The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development has taken measures to deliver the transponder devices to all the multiday fishing vessels which will enable monitoring of multiday fishing vessels engaged in deep sea fishing from the ground. These devices will be able to investigate the location of the respective fishing vessel in sea and this facility would be helpful to rescue the vessels in case of a danger or accident at sea. According to the International Law of the Sea, multiday fishing vessels shall be equipped with this latest facility. The government has observed that new technology has to be incorporated for the sustainable management of the island’s fisheries industry and the implementation of the global concept of the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) has become mandatory. According to the government about 3000 multi-day fishing vessels owned by Sri Lankan fishermen are being operated in the deep sea and in international waters in the Indian Ocean. Accordingly, the government has incurred a huge cost to deliver the facility to Sri Lankan fishing vessels. Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera launched the program to deliver the access facility to the owners of deep sea fishing vessels and the members of fishing crew yesterday at a function held at the Dikowita fishery harbor. The access facility will be delivered to the vessel owners via all the fishery harbors.
