The Suramangalam Corporation Modern Fish Market Fish Traders Association has urged the district administration to slap a ban on the functioning of roadside fish stalls, particularly during the weekends. In a petition to V. Sampath, District Collector, A. Mohammad Ali, president of the Fish Traders’ Association, stated that they had to spend much for fetching the shops in the modern market, one of the major fish markets with modern facilities in the western belt, on lease. Further, they had to pay a big amount as monthly rent, besides maintenance charges and power consumption charges. On many occasions such as fishing ban period, the sale of fish was very much affected causing them financial loss. The fish was in good demand only during the weekend and government holidays. The business at the fish market was very much affected during the weekends due to the flourishing of roadside fish stalls on all the major thoroughfares in the city limits. They functioned in an unhygienic condition. The stall owners had to spend huge amount for procuring costly fish varieties such as ‘vanjeeram’ from far away coastal areas and they would be suffering loss if they could not sell them the same day. This not only hit the sale in the fish market, but also affected the surrounding environment where the roadside stalls functioned.
