Goa has 29 cold storages with capacity of 34.95 million MT, as per data released by the central government on Tuesday. As per All India Cold Storage Capacity and Technology – Base line Survey of 2014 conducted by M/s Hansa Research Group, 75% of the total cold storage capacity in the country was being used for the purpose of storage of horticulture crops including potato. While 95% of cold storages in the country were owned by private sector, 3% belonged to cooperatives and remaining 2% were under public sector undertakings. Besides, horticulture, cold chain projects can also benefit dairy, meat and meat products and other agriculture products to contain post production economic and quality losses. Goa has a vibrant fishing industry, which also makes it important to promote the setting up of cold storage units. The dearth of cold storage units near fishing jetties in the state was a major hurdle for the growth of the sector. In 2014, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) decided to allocate 1,000 crore as direct finance for such projects in the country.
