After a three-month embargo, Rangamati district administration allowed the local fishermen to continue fishing in the Kaptai Lake from yesterday. Every year, the authorities impose a ban on fishing from May 1 to July 31 for safe breeding to increase fish production in the lake as mother fishes lay eggs during this time of the year. In a letter issued last week, the district administration instructed Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) official in the district to allow the fishermen fishing in the lake, Muhammad Asaduzzaman, manager of Rangamati BFDC said. Nearly 21,000 fishermen of two hill districts — Rangamati and Khagrachhari — earn their livelihood through fishing in the lake.
