Owners of fishing boats in Tanintharyi Region must provide tax clearance certificates to get or extend their licences, according to the Fishery Department. Hlwan Moe Zaw, head of the Myeik District fishery department, said: “We start asking for certificates from boat owners before renewing their licences this year. Over 800 boats have their licences extended. The region is home to thousands of fishing boats, he added. “There are three types of tax: income, advance and ownership. The owners can ask for certificates at the Internal Revenue Department after paying tax. The owners have to pay tax based on gross registered tonnage of ships and a vessel can fish for 90 days and it is considered as one time. The tax increases with the times the boats go fishing even if they do not stay a full 90 days at sea.
