An earthquake measuring 4.9 on Richter scale struck Nicobar Islands on Sunday morning. As per the latest reports, the tremors were felt at 9.18 am and no loss of life or property has been reported as of yet. Earlier in March this year, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake had jolted the Andaman and Nicobar island archipelago. According to the National Centre for Seismology, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences, the earthquake, whose epicentre was in the Nicobar islands region, had occurred at 8:21 am at a depth of 10 kms. Meanwhile, in November 2015, the sea around the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago had witnessed 12 earthquakes in 24 hours, with almost all measuring 5 and more on the Richter scale, but no tsunami alert was issued back then.
