The Mapusa fish market on Wednesday witnessed a deserted look due to shortage of fish as fishing trawlers and canoes could not venture into the sea due to rough conditions. Mapusa fish market is one of the largest fish markets in North Goa from where fish is supplied to various parts of the state. On Wednesday, Hindus who had immersed the five-day Ganesh idol were seen rushing to the Mapusa market but they had to return empty handed as by 10 am most the fish vendors had sold their stock and had left the market. Small size mackerel was sold at Rs 100 for 5-6, Prawns was priced at Rs 400 kg and verli (small size fish) was sold at Rs 200 per vanto. Nitesh Volvoikar, Cunchelim resident who went to the Mapusa fish market in the morning had to return without fish. He said that assuming there will be a rush in the fish market, I entered the market at 11.30 am to buy fish but was surprised to see the vendors had already sold their stock. Similarly another Siolim resident Kamalkar said, “Entire Shravan we did not eat fish and after immersing the Ganesh idol we hoped to consume some fish, but was shocked to see the market deserted. Shashikala Govekar, president of Mapusa Fish Vendors Association said, “Due to rough conditions, fishing trawlers and our traditional fishing canoes could not venture into sea. Whatever stock we had was sold in the morning hours.
