Demanding permission for ‘stay fishing’, the mechanised boat workers struck work on Saturday. Since the country boat fishermen are against ‘stay fishing’ by mechanised boats as it was causing frequent accidents on high-sea resulting in loss of life of country boat fishermen, mechanised boat fishermen of Thoothukudi fishing harbour are allowed to do fishing between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. Complaining that the ‘short duration’ was not sufficient for doing their fishing operations as it was causing “huge loss to them every day, the mechanised boat fishermen struck work on Saturday. They said the government should allow them to do ‘stay fishing’ in which the mechanised boats would stay in high-seas for a few days and return to shore after getting huge catches.
