Talpona river is the biggest river in Canacona taluka and is blessed with a natural jetty at the mouth of the river. Over the years due to lack of attention by the Fisheries Department in upgrading facilities at the jetty, the local trawler owners are preferring to anchor their vessels either at Betul or Bheitkul in Karwar a district of Karnataka. There are hundreds of families residing on the banks of Talpona River with fishing as their primary activity. Decades ago this jetty was home to over 30 trawlers owned by the local fishermen and was a bustling hamlet with all other supporting economic activities, but due to lack of basic facilities the trawler owners have shifted base to nearby jetties in and outside the state. Pradeep Mokhardakar, a traditional fisherman, who stays close to the Talpona jetty and owns a fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) boat with assistance from department of fisheries, says that there are absolutely no facilities at the jetty. Mokhardakar said that the Talpona jetty has no fuelling station, ice or cold storage facilities, sanitation facilities, drinking water, shed for repairing the nets and boat repair yard. “Without these facilities, fishing activity is not possible at the jetty, he said. Pradeep Pagi, a traditional fisherman and a trawler owner from Rajbagh, Tarir, says, “Whenever there is bumper catch, we find it impossible to preserve it as there is no ice plant or cold storage facility in the taluka, due to which we end up disposing the fish at a low rate. Kust Talpankar, another trawler owner, complains of formation of a sand bar at the entrance of the river and if left on its own, it could be dangerous to the trawlers “During low tide it’s difficult to take the trawlers out as the depth is too less and the draft is not enough resulting in huge losses to the trawler owners. Due to this, I have stopped venturing into the sea since last 5 years, Talpankar said. There are also nets, ropes and other plastic waste disposed recklessly at the jetty which makes it difficult for the boat helmsman while manoeuvring their vessels. Locals are reportedly found complaining about the adventure sports activities carried out by a starred hotel just metres away from the port which creates a nuisance for movement of trawlers and FRP fishing boats. There are also complains of damage to the nets cast in the open river due to this activity by the resort. Recently, Fisheries Minister Vinod Palyekar accompanied by local leaders of Goa Forward Party Prashant Naik and Mohandas Lolienkar, inspected the jetty and had interacted with the fishing community from the village. After the visit of Palyekar, the villagers are ecstatic that the minister would solve their difficulties at the earliest and restore the past glory of this jetty.
