State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development, Dilip Wedaarachchi said he expects to introduce a new insurance scheme soon for the fishermen that will benefit their families as well. Pledging to uplift the fisheries industry in coming years in collaboration with the National Fisheries Federation, State Minister Wedaarachchi said he has initiated the program of Blue Economy for the development of the Sri Lanka’s fisheries Industry. The State Minister made these remarks while participating in the third general assembly of the National Fisheries Federation on 12th September 2017. New members were appointed to the federation at this event. “We have determined to fulfill our duty to the fisher community with the support of these newly appointed officers. We should pave the way for real fishermen to establish fishing associations and bear responsible offices in such organizations,” he continued. “I specially hope to establish a fisheries banking system in Sri Lanka. Also I hope to introduce a new insurance scheme for the fishermen that will benefit their spouses and children too,” the State Minister added. MP Chathura Senaratne (MP) and other senior government officials attended the event.
