Iceland’s main scientific and research agency, Matis states that it is ready to support Sri Lanka’s fisheries industry. Sveinn Margeirsson the Chief Executive Officer of Matis, which is one of the leading research, development and testing organizations working in the global food industry, during an interview with national television said his organization is willing to share the technological knowledge with Sri Lanka in the realm of the fisheries activities. Iceland is one of the leading countries in fisheries production in the world and Matis is the scientific and research arm of the industry. The organization provides technological know-how to 50 countries in the world. Sri Lanka’s fisheries products have a high demand in Europe, in consequent to the GSP+ tax concession. The technological know-how is compulsory for improving Sri Lanka’s fisheries sector. Margeirsson said Matis has a history of working with Sri Lanka participating in the United Nation University Fisheries Training Programme (UNU-FTP) where Mats has handled the specialist training in Quality Management of Fish Handling and Processing part of the program. “We need to share knowledge, not transfer. Local knowledge in Iceland and local knowledge in Sri Lanka can be combined, adding to the whole picture of knowledge in the fisheries and seafood sector,” he said.
