Contrary to the announcement made by U T Khader a few months ago that traditional fishermen need to submit white kerosene bill to the government to get the subsidy reimbursed into their bank account, the food and civil supplies minister on Wednesday said the government would fix an amount and credit it to the accounts of the beneficiaries on a monthly basis through RTGS, irrespective of whether or not they submit the bill of kerosene procured from the open market. The state had so far been providing kerosene via the public distribution system to fishermen for several years now. The state government has been finding it difficult to procure kerosene to these beneficiaries after the Centre reduced the supply of the fuel with a rise in LPG connections. “So, money will be credited to their accounts once they provide the bills and other details. Rs 60 crore has been set aside for the scheme,” he told the media at Circuit House here. According to Khader, there are at least 1,400 families practicing traditional fishing in the district and the state government had been providing them around 1.20 lakh litres of kerosene per month. Khader said that Karnataka first introduced a system wherein a ration card holder could avail ration in any part of the state. When brought to his notice that vendors were refusing to supply ration in other shops, he said loopholes will be plugged soon. He denied that there was a delay in issuing ration cards to applicants. Of the 19,000 beneficiaries, details of 12,000 applicants have been verified and ration cards printed while cards were already delivered to another 4,000 persons, he said.
