Water-logging caused by the last two days’ incessant rainfall is taking a toll on the crops and fisheries in the low-lying areas across in several districts. So far, the rain induced inundation had washed out several hundred fish enclosures in Tungipara and Kotalipara upazilas of Gopalganj, Gopalganj Fisheries Officer Narayan Chandra Mandal told the Dhaka Tribune. Aman paddy fields in vast areas and some early winter vegetables have also been inundated. Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Deputy Director Samir Kumar Goshwami noted that the vegetables would bear the brunt while the paddy may have a fair chance to survive if the stagnated water recedes quickly. In Kurigram, squalls lashed the paddy fields of several hundred acres, bending the stems down. The average wind speed in the district was 25-30km per hour throughout the day, but there were sporadic spells of wind as strong as 40km per hour, according to met officials. Paddy fields in Sadar, Rajarhat, Phulbari, Nageshwari and Chilmari upazilas were battered by strong winds on Saturday, but the crops may survive if those fields are not inundated, according to DAE officials. Our correspondents in coastal districts Barguna and Bagerhat have reported that fish enclosures in the low-lying areas were inundated during high tides, accompanied by incessant rainfall. 2 crushed to death by mud walls At least one man and a young child have been killed, in separate incidents of mud walls collapsing in Kushtia and Gazipur.
