There is no information currently to link any merchant ship with the incident in which a fishing boat capsized off the Beypore coast on October 11, according to a statement filed by the Mercantile Marine Department in the Kerala High Court. In the statement filed on Wednesday, the department said that it would be premature at this stage to come to a conclusion regarding the definite involvement of any vessel in the incident as there was lack of sufficient information in this regard. The investigation into the alleged collision was in progress. The department said two merchant ships which were in the proximity of the boat were under investigation and had been restrained from leaving the Indian waters till the investigation absolved them of any involvement. Two teams of professional investigators were engaged in the physical inspection of these two vessels for collecting corroborating evidence. The definite identity of the merchant ship involved, if any, could be confirmed only after the completion of the thorough investigation. Meanwhile, in an affidavit, the Coast Guard said only one body was found inside the boat. Despite all the efforts put in by the Coast Guard, no body was sighted. The petitioner’s averment that two fishermen got trapped inside the partially sunken vessel was baseless. The affidavit and the statement were filed in response to a petition filed by Jose and three other relatives of the fishermen who were on board the fishing vessel seeking to recover the bodies inside the vessel.
