The South Indian Fishermen Welfare Association has demanded compensation to fishermen in Nochikuppam who were affected by demonetisation, cyclone Vardah and Chennai oil spill. The association held a meeting at Nochikuppam in Santhome on Sunday. It said demonitisation, which was announced on November 8 last year, affected the fisherfolk, especially women selling fish on the loop road behind the light house. The fishing community had to buy fish only by making payment in cash and there was no point of sale machine or banking transaction. This was followed by cyclone Vardah on December 12, which forced the fishermen to stay indoors. Added to this is the oil leak from a tanker ship off Ennore in January this year, which affected the coastline up to Neelankarai. The fisherwomen were unable to sell fish. Many people refused buy fish fearing that the oil spill could have affected fish. The fishermen were unable to venture into the waters in the last 15 days due to rain and inclement weather. Whenever the weather conditions improved, they were unable to start the engines of their boats as sand has entered into them. The fisheries department should consider these issues and provide compensation to the fishermen in Nochikuppam area, the association resolved.
