The state fisheries department has banned sea-fishing around the vital offshore crude oil installation locations in the high-security zone of the port here. Frequent acts of trespassing by sea-worthy fishing vessels and crafts are considered a security threat to the port. Though, the entry into high-security seawaters by local trawler and vessel operators has mostly been unintentional and inadvertent in nature, an order on prohibition of sea-fishing had to be issued to ensure the security of port and the offshore oil installation points, said deputy director, marine (fisheries), Subrat Das. “The sea-going fishermen and crew of the fishing vessels have been warned not to venture into prohibited zones in future. If they do so, legal action would be initiated against them for trespass,” said Das. The department has also requested the authorities to appropriately demarcate the offshore prohibited water zones so that sea-going fishermen could sight the no-fishing boundaries, said another official. “The officials should understand that the acts of trespass into the prohibited port area have always been inadvertent. They should properly demarcate the no-fishing sea-zone to ensure that trespass does not happen,” said Srikant Parida, president of the Odisha Trawl Operators’ Association.
