This importance of aquatic environment in sustaining life both in and out of water was reinforced through a series of events held here to mark World Fisheries Day on Tuesday. Depiction of problems and engineering interventions was made through short films, posters and oration at the College of Fisheries Engineering, Tamil Nadu Fisheries University. Working models of science and engineering concepts and explanatory exhibits were designed to provoke the thinking of invitees consisting of around 500 students from higher secondary schools in and around Nagapattinam as well as professionals from the fisheries sector including employees, stake holders and officers from fisheries department. S. Balasubramanian, Dean, inaugurated the celebrations by administering an oath to the participants, which elicited their commitment to work together to improve fisheries management, protect the oceans and safeguard the marine boundary for future generations. Emphasising the importance of sustainability in the fisheries sector, he explained the ill-effects of excessive fishing, habitat destruction and other serious threats caused to marine and fresh water resources. The university’s Fisheries College and Research Instiute, Thalainayeru, organised a field-level training programme on ‘Sustainable Vannamei Shrimp Culture’ at Jambanannodai, near Muthupettai, for 25 participants. The programme was conducted by B. Sundaramoorthy, Dean In-Charge, and T. Anand, Assistant Professor. An essay writing competition was also conducted as part of the celebration. Prof. Sundaramoorthy administered the ‘sustainable fisheries management’ pledge to students and staff.
