The State-level inauguration of the Fishermen Rehabilitation Project aimed at providing shelters to indigent fishermen was done by Fisheries Minister J. Mercykutty Amma on Wednesday. Ensuring fair price for fish and improving the living standards of fishermen were the priorities of the government and the Fisheries Department, she said at the function at Anchuthengu. It was the first time in the State’s history that fishermen were being given financial aid to build houses in the location of their choice, she said. For buying a 2 or 3 cent plot and constructing a house there, a family will get a sum of Rs. 10 lakh. Housing complex The housing complex of 24 flats comprising 192 units at Muttathara for the rehabilitation of fishermen was nearing completion, the Minister said. The government was planning to inaugurate it in January 2018. The Minister distributed the title deeds of the houses and financial aid for construction of houses to beneficiaries at the function. Assembly Deputy Speaker V. Sasi presided. A. Sampath, MP, district panchayat vice president Shailaja Beegum, and others took part.
