The district administration have decided to deploy geotube seawalls at Chellanam to protect the coast from sea erosion. A statement from the district administration on Saturday said 1,150 metres of seawall would be built along the Chellanam coast immediately. Sanction for around ?8 crore has been sought from the government for the purpose. Two breakwaters too will be built using ?3 crore to be sanctioned by the State government. The Department of Minor Irrigation is hopeful that the work on seawalls can be completed by April. Seawalls are immediately required at Velankanni Bazaar (300 metres, Companyppady (300 metres), Vachakkal (100 metres), and Puthenthode Fishing Gap (110 metres). The suggestions came up at a review meeting convened by K.J. Maxy, MLA, on Saturday, the statement added. For the record, a team of scientists from IIT-Chennai had studied the requirement for breakwater at Kandekkadu. A proposal for building breakwaters in T’ shape has already been submitted, the statement said.
