A Central committee would soon come to the state to study the impact of cyclone Ackhi. This was revealed by chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami while describing the demands put forward by him before the prime minister here on Tuesday. Palaniswami was addressing reporters at the Bharathi House in Kanyakumari on Tuesday evening after taking part in the cyclone-related discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The CM said that he had also urged the Centre to declare Cyclone Ockhi a national disaster which the PM agreed to consider. He said the Rs 9,302 crore sought by the state included Rs 5,255 crore for relief and long-term restoration works for the damage caused by the cyclone on November 30. The remaining Rs 4,047 crore was for repairing damages caused by the recent floods in Chennai and other coastal districts and to carry out permanent works to prevent floods in Chennai. Palaniswami also sought Rs 4,218 crore for establishing an integrated fishing harbour in Kanyakumari district. The CM said that the harbour would have cold storage and fish processing facilities, helipad, breakwaters and groyne to prevent erosion along the coast and provide satellite communication facilities to fishermen to alert them on disasters. These were among nine requests the CM made to the PM in his memorandum. Providing high frequency wireless sets for fishermen with 90 per cent subsidy and a dedicated satellite radio channel for fishermen were his other key demands. Other important demands the CM placed before the Centre included enhancement of disaster compensation for loss of life to Rs 10 lakh (from Rs 4 lakh), for disability to Rs 5 lakh (from Rs 2 lakh), for banana plantation damage to Rs 1.25 lakh per hectare (from Rs 13,500) and Rs 2.5 lakh per hectare for rubber (from Rs 18,000). On protests by farmers seeking better compensation for their banana, rubber and other agriculture and horticulture varieties, the CM said that the state had already given adequate compensation to them. “But since they demanded an increase we obliged,” he said as he ruled out scope for further enhancing the relief for farmers. Palaniswami refused to comment on the number of fishermen who got killed in the cyclone and those who are still missing.
