The Fisheries Minister Vinod Palyekar has stated that the government intends to allow only two fishing trawlers to be registered in the name of one person.“The move was undertaken to restrict the number of fishing vessels with an individual fisherman and also to protect the marginal fisherman who may sell his vessel to a wealthier fisherman thereby rending him out of the fishing activity and it will create monopoly of certain individuals on fishing, who are financially strong, said Palyekar responding to a question tabled by Congress legislator Antonio Fernandes in the just concluded assembly session. “The guidelines have come into force with effect from 03/05/2017. The total month-wise average figures of the quantity of fish caught and landed in various jetties by the trawlers registered in the State for the past three years. Till now the total number of trawlers registered in the State is 1104, he said. He further said that the total average quantity of fish that arrives from outside the State for sale in Goa with month-wise average figures for the past three years along with names of the places from where it comes is not available with the Department. Meanwhile, the minister said that the Government has proposed the formation of Fisheries Corporation to provide fish to the public at a reasonable rate.Responding to another question tabled by Alexio Reginaldo, the minister replied saying that the Department of Fisheries has not received any report of contamination of fish due to ocean pollution. “Further the Department along with the officials of Food and Drugs Administration has taken sample of fish from Margao and Panjim fish markets on September 8 and 9, 2017 and it is observed from Food and Drugs Administration report that the fish sample analysed is satisfactory. The department will do a routine inspection to detect contamination of fish being sold in the fish market, he added.
