The government has not received any satisfying response yet from the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd. to compensate fishermen in Yanam as part of a corporate social responsibility initiative, said Minister for Health Malladi Krishna Rao. Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and Mr. Rao, along with senior officials, held discussions with representatives of GSPCL on Thursday on the corporate social responsibility programme. Loss of livelihood Mr Rao told The Hindu that the company did not commit on a compensation package for the fishermen in Yanam. The government wanted the company to compensate the loss of livelihood to fishermen for 14 months. The fishermen could not venture into sea when the company carried out offshore rigging work, he said. The company representatives, during a meeting with Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, had agreed to compensate for certain months. “However, they are non-committal now. We will take up the issue with the Ministry, he added. As per the plan, the firm was to give the Union Territory ?12 crore for investment in Yanam. It had remitted ?10 crore, said an official.
