The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority is encouraging fishermen to participate in an insurance scheme to provide protection for them.
Deputy Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said it was compulsory for fisherman aged between 18 to 70, who had been receiving cost of living allowance, to join the scheme which would be effective on Tuesday.
“At present, about 4,000 fishermen in Kedah, who are getting cost of living allowance, are eligible to join the insurance scheme,” he said after handing over the allowance to fishermen here today.
He said about 1,000 fishermen in Langkawi would receive the cost of living allowance involving an allocation of about RM190,000.
