Rescuers in Indonesia say they have led a beached sperm whale back to the sea after hordes of spectators blocked its return for days.

Pramudya Harzani from the Jakarta Animal Aid Network said Sunday that dozens of navy divers and volunteers used 10 boats to pull the 2-ton whale to deep waters late Saturday.

The 12-meter (39-foot) whale washed ashore Wednesday near West Java’s Karawang beach and attracted hundreds of onlookers who posed for pictures with it. Rescuers tried to lead the whale to sea Thursday, but it washed back to shore after fishing boats packed with paying passengers blocked it from swimming.

Harzani says the whale was scratched and bruised, apparently from people climbing on it. It re-floated and spouted water from its head before swimming to the ocean.
