The Fishermen’s Society in Bahrain has threatened to stop going out to sea for shrimping in protest at new maps demarcating fishing sites.

According to these, the main fishing areas are closed, prompting Coastguard to arrest and detain fishermen caught in these areas and impose fines of up to BD300 on them, the society said in a letter to the Marines Resources Directorate.

Fishermen’s Protection Society honorary president Waheed Al Dossary said a Press conference will be held today to announce a date for the suspension of shrimping activities.

Fishermen will also reveal maps for sites suitable for fishing in accordance with marine studies prepared by the society for the kngdom’s territorial waters, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
