Two French fishermen are missing after being washed overboard off the Isles of Scilly.

The men, who were not wearing lifejackets, went into the English Channel 30 nautical miles north west of the islands at 18:30 BST on Saturday.

A helicopter from RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall and the St Mary’s Lifeboat helped in the search, along with six French fishing boats.

Falmouth Coastguard said it was “unlikely” they would be found alive.

Falmouth watch manager Andy Cattrell said: “The two fishermen were wearing yellow oilskins, but no lifejackets or buoyancy aids when they were washed overboard.

“Sadly, despite an intensive search, we have been unable to locate them.”

As well as the French fishing vessels, a French Navy ship was also involved in the search.
