With the fishing industry on the west coast of Malaysia’s Johor State coming to a standstill with 1,000 boats remaining ashore since haze from forest fires in Sumatra struck early this month, the fishermen are appealing for help from the state government.

Muar-Batu Pahat Fishermen’s Association president Ser Boon Huat said strong winds, poor visibility and hazy conditions in the Straits of Malacca forced the 3,000-odd fishermen to stay on shore.

He said visibilitiy worsened to 400 metres today compared to a nautical mile three days ago, making it dangerous for them to go out.

Ser said they were worried as the Meteorological Department predicted the haze could prolong to September this year.

“We appeal to the Johor Government for financial assistance as our families will suffer with barely no income coming in.”

He said many coastal residents suffered from painful, reddish and watery eyes, running noses, cough, fever and vomitting when exposed to the haze, forcing them to seek treatments from private and government hospitals and clinics.
