Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu poaching in Sri Lankan waters have accused the Sri Lankan Navy of snapping their fishing nets.
According to Indian media reports, Sri Lankan Navy snapped fishing nets of Tamil Nadu fishermen set sail from Tamil Nadu in over 20 boats when they were fishing near Sri Lanka’s Katchatheevu islet Sunday.
Sri Lankan naval men, in three ships and two boats, had warned fishermen yesterday against fishing near Katchatheevu, the report said.
Indian Police has said that around 1,400 boats have left last night from Tamil Nadu for fishing around the disputed island. Katchatheevu, is an uninhabited islet in the Palk straits, was ceded to Sri Lanka by India in 1974 under an Indian Supreme Court directive.
Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu constantly invade the Sri Lankan waters in hundreds of boasts and fish around the island.
Sri Lankan fishermen in the North complain that the sheer number of Indian boats deplete the fishing resources and damage the sea bed hurting their livelihoods.
Sri Lanka Navy is constantly patrolling the country’s waters to prevent invasion by Indian fishermen.
